TEN

Monday morning came way too fast. I wasn’t sure how I was going to get through the day without touching Sander. Aside from bathroom breaks and showers, there wasn’t a moment we hadn’t touched. He held my hand under the dining table, held me through the nights and guided me with his hand on my back as we walked.

I tugged Sander’s jacket closer around me to ward off the chill. After Moonstone I hadn’t given it back and I had no plans on it.

“Sander!” Gabriel hollered from across the school parking lot.

Jen was with him and she waved to flag us down, as if we couldn’t see them. They were glaringly obvious and causing way too much attention for a high school.

We caught up to them and Jen’s eyes went wide. “Sander! You kissed her!”

I blushed and held my wrist out for her to inspect. She held my hand up and squealed. “This is perfect. Aww, what a sweet tribute to carry with you.”

Pulling my hand back, I snuggled closer to Sander and he took my hand. “Let’s go get the day started. Jamie said he’d get our classes to line up. Apparently Kade is still here and we can’t call him out without disclosing ourselves, so we will have to deal with him as well.” He ground out the last few words.

We headed toward the school and only had about half of everyone’s eyes on us when we entered, which was better than I expected. I gripped Sander’s hand tighter and kept him close. It was hard to ignore the other girls and the way they watched him.

I only have eyes for you.

I almost thought I’d imagined his voice in my head, but he stopped me, pulling me to a set of lockers out of the way. “Did you hear me?”

I nodded.

He grinned. Good.

“Come on you two, we have classes to get to.” Jen sounded way too excited about science, which was hers and Gabriel’s first class.

Sander was with me in Mr. Benedict’s math class. We got there early.

“Ah, Ms. Cyrus. And Sander Lux?” Mr. Benedict had on his favorite sweater vest and looked over his wire-rimmed glasses.

Sander stood taller. “Yes.”

I shifted my bag, so it sat higher on my shoulder. “I was hoping you could move my seat. There was an incident with Kade Friday before fall break.”

Mr. Benedict nodded. “Oh, yes. Mr. Knight informed us after school, and I believe all of your teachers have made arrangements for you to move seats.” He gestured to the table in the opposite back corner. “I believe that one is open.”

Relief flooded through me knowing at least in this class Sander and I wouldn’t be separated.

I pulled Sander with me to the back table. We sat down and Kade walked in. Sander tensed.

Kade looked to my usual place but then shifted to see me with Sander. He glared and kept staring as he took his seat.

“He knows,” Sander whispered, leaning in.

“Let him.” I shrugged. “It’s not like he and I were a thing.
